May 3, 1940 – January 15, 2018

Robert Keith Dunbar, better known as “Bobby”, living at 1825 Puddin Hill Road, Scranton, NC. 27875, the Sladesville Community, died peacefully at home on January 15 2018, at the age of 77.

Born in Beaufort County, May 3, 1940, he was the son of the late Keith Barrott and Thelma K. Richards Dunbar.  He was a graduate of West Hyde High School and attended Chowan University and N. C. State.  He was a partner in a logging business and farmed for many years until his health caused him to retire.  Bobby was an avid sports fan enjoying all sports but especially Nascar racing.  He was a large fan of N. C.. State basketball.  Bobby had a great sense of humor and was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone who needed it.  He especially enjoyed having his family together to eat Sunday dinner.  He was loved by many and will be greatly missed.

Bobby was a past board member of Pungo Christian Academy, He was a member of Swan Quarter Christian Church where he served on the steering and building committee for the Fellowship Hall.   He was awarded Outstanding Service Award for President of the Mattamuskeet Jaycees in 1970-71, and also Outstanding Farmer Award by the Mattamuskeet Jaycees and Carolina Power and Light Company.

Bobby was married to his wife, Rebecca Smith Dunbar, for 57 years.  He and his wife had two sons, Robbie and wife, Wendy, Richard and wife, Tina, five wonderful grandchildren, Lane, Jordan, Keith, Joshua, Kylie and one great-grandson, Landon; a devoted sister-in-law, Carolyn Dunbar, and her two sons and their families.  He also had a brother and sister-in-law, Gloria and Leland Harris and a sister-in-law, Sherma Mason and their families; a special granddog, Lily, whom he loved very much.

Bobby was also preceded in death by a brother, James K. Dunbar.

A Celebration of his Life will be held at Mt. Olive Church of Christ on Thursday, January 18, 2018, at 2:00 p.m. Linwood Adams, Mike Caton and Dr. Bill Griffin will officiate.  Burial will follow in the church cemeteryll.  Serving as pallbearers will be Chuck Dunbar, Todd Dunbar, Nathan Dunbar, Dwain Mason, Mark Carawan, Ray Tooley , Chad Spencer and Richard Credle.

The family would like to thank all the wonderful friends who sent cards, prayers, phone calls, food, visits and concerns to him during his illness, and thank you for the splendid care received by the nurses of Amedysis Hospice and Liberty Home Care.  Also a special thanks to Joyce Russell, a long-time friend of the family who took excellent care of Bobby for 5 ½ years.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Pungo Christian Academy, 983 West  Main Street, Belhaven NC 27810.

The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall of the church between 1 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. prior to the funeral service and other times at the home.
