Elwood R. Armstrong, Jr., 72, of Columbia, died Friday, October 14, 2016 at his residence, surrounded by his family.

Born in Tyrrell County, May 11, 1944, he was the son of the late Elwood R., Sr. and Maybell Spencer Armstrong. He was married to the former Patricia Welch, who survives.

He spent most of his working years in the Auto Sales Industry and as a long distance truck driver, he was a former member of the Tyrrell County Volunteer Fire Department, enjoyed the outdoors and especially hunting. He was dedicated to his children and grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, at Soundside Free Will Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Rev. Royce Reynolds will officiate.

The family will visit with friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

In addition to his wife, surviving are four daughters, Tammy Waller Crook and husband, Roger, Sr., of Chesapeake, VA, Leigh Anne Schreckengost and husband James, Lindsay Dawn Oakes and husband Brian and Leslie Patricia Coltrain and husband Troy all of Columbia; a brother, William Thomas Armstrong of Columbia; a sister Carol A. Woodley and husband Floyd of Plymouth; seven grandchildren, Chase Gutierrez, Evan Gutierrez, Zachary Gutierrez, Brandon Mackaen Coltrain, Caiden Matthew Coltrain, Alana Grace Coltrain and William Schreckengost; two sisters-in-law, Betty Armstrong of Red House, VA and Barbara Welch Armstrong of Columbia; many cousins, aunts and uncles.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Ronald Armstrong, Franklin Dewey Armstrong and Roger Armstrong and a sister, Shelby Balowsky.
