Anzio J. Barnes
January 2, 1944 - November 27, 2016

Anzio Johnston Barnes, age 72, died at Vidant Beaufort Hospital in Washington, NC on Sunday, November 27, 2016.

Born January 2, 1944, in Princeton, WV, to Olga and Robert Bruce Johnston, she attended Princeton High School and graduated in 1961. Over her life, she lived in many different places -- including Cleveland, OH; Roanoke, VA; Raleigh, NC; and Atlanta, GA -- before settling in Creswell, NC, where she worked as a bookkeeper until retiring in 2009.

Anzio will be remembered for her generous spirit, for which she was awarded a Governor's Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service in 2001. She also loved to play games of rummy, watch old western movies, and listen to the music of Elvis Presley. She had been a faithful member of Oak Grove Baptist Church in Roper, NC since 1974.

Anzio was married to the late Bill Barnes of Creswell, NC. She was a loving mother to six children – John Barnes and Carol Phelps of Creswell, NC, Billy Barnes of Edenton, NC, Barbie Tarkington, Jane Haddow-Green of Greenville, NC, and Greg Barnes of Denver, CO (all surviving). She was also a loving grandmother to six grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren

Other survivors include her brother, Beaman Johnston of Bluefield, VA, sister, Bonnie Handwerk, of Sagamore Hills, OH, and her sister Nina Alvis of Peninsula, OH.

Anzio was preceded in death by five sisters, Jean Estep, Zell Sparks, , Betty Hosmer, Lois Thomas, and Fran Hunold and a brother, Bob Johnston.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Saturday December 3, 2016 at Oak Grove Baptist Church, 15939 NC Hwy 32 , Roper, NC. Inurnment will follow at the family plot in the church cemetery.

The family will be accepting guests during the week at the residence of Sam and Carol Phelps, 2041 Ambrose Road, Creswell, NC.
