Gertrude P. Carawan
May 18, 1923 – May 30, 2017

Eunice Gertrude Pugh Carawan, 94, of Engelhard and most recently a resident of Cross Creek Health Care Center, died Tuesday May 30, 2017.

Born in Hyde County, May 18, 1923 she was the daughter of the late Alfred Jackson Pugh and Willie Marie O'Neal Pugh. She was first married to Allen Jakeman who preceded her in death and later married Percy Carawan who also preceded her in death.

She was a member of Soule United Methodist Church, a graduate of the former Engelhard High School, Class of 1941. She was a strong lady in the midst of hardship, living through the Great Depression. She worked as a welder on several United States Naval Ships in Baltimore, Maryland. Later she moved to Norfolk, VA, where she raised her family and lived until her retirement in 1983.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday June 3, 2017 at Soule United Methodist Church. Pastor Jerald Craddock will officiate, burial will follow in the family plot in Brooks Cemetery.

Surviving is a son Kenneth L. Jakeman of Virginia Beach, VA; two daughters, Jeannette Marie Zimmerman and husband Allen of Springfield, TN, Lora Furrow of Kissimmiee, Florida; eleven grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Richard A. Jakeman and Daniel E. Zimmerman and a sister, Hilda P. Brown.

The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Bryan Funeral Service, Swan Quarter.
