Gordon W. Meekins
August 18, 1928 – June 16, 2016

Captain Gordon Wendell Meekins, 87, of 85 Lazy Lane, Engelhard, died Thursday, June 16, 2016 at his residence.

Born in Elizabeth City, August 18, 1928, he was the son of the late Maynard Faire and Lillie Wise Meekins. He was married to the former Sarah Sears who survives.

Gordon was a member of the Engelhard Christian Church and he was known for his love to sit down with friends and family to share and hear fishing stories.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, June 18, 2018 at the family plot in Soule Cemetery. Scott Sukeforth will officiate.

In addition to his wife surviving are two sons, Dell Meekins and wife Karen of Engelhard, Michael Meekins and wife Beverly of Engelhard; two daughters, Susie M. Newman and husband Tommy of Swan Quarter and Nancy M. Lewis and husband Randy of Ladson, SC; a stepson Flave Spencer and wife Pat of Fairfield; two step-daughters Martha Ross and husband Lester of Swan Quarter and Ann Spencer of Fairfield; eight grandchildren, Eddie Newman, Dell Newman, Richard Newman, Mike Meekins, Tres Meekins, Charity Cooke, Mason McGowan and Stormie McGowan; five step grandchildren, Heather Driver, David Swindell, Celeste Lewis, Callie Carawan and Megan Spencer; sixteen great grandchildren and one great greatgrandchild and his loyal companion Sam.

He was preceded in death by the mother of his children Nancy Cuthrell Meekins and following her death was married to Barbara Weston Meekins who also preceded him in death, and a brother Lloyd Meekins.

The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Bryan Funeral Service, Swan Quarter and other times at his residence.
