JOHN C. KIRKMAN, JR.
October 13, 1932 – April 19, 2016

John Calhoun Kirkman, Jr., 83, of 3371 N. C. Highway 94-North, Columbia, died Tuesday, April 19, 2016, at Vidant-Edgecombe Hospital in Tarboro.

Born in Chatham County, N. C., October 13, 1932, he was the son of the late John C. Kirkman Sr. and Mary Henry Lewis Kirkman. He was married to the former Faye Rogerson who survives. He moved to Jamesville at an early age with his family. He completed high school at Fork Union Military Academy and later graduated from the former N. C. State College in Raleigh with a Bachelor's Degree in Forestry and Surveying. He also played football while at N. C. State.

Working at times with Union Camp Paper Company in Franklin, VA and with Columbia Milling Company, his family later owned and operated a sawmill in Jamesville for 16 years and later in Columbia where he retired in 1981. He and his brother, "Tink" were instrumental in restarting the football program at Columbia High School. He was a long time member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church.

Funeral Services will be held at 3:00 P.M. Friday at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church. Reverend Vickie Woolard will officiate. Burial will follow in Soundside Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, John C. "Butch" Kirkman III and wife Tobi of Columbia; a daughter, Tracie Brooke Kirkman Heffner and husband, Andy of Greensboro; a brother, Thomas "Tink" Kirkman and wife, Ann of Jamesville; a sister, Lina K. Hamilton of Greenville; four grandchildren, Patrick Kirkman and wife, Sandie, Emily Kirkman, Trevor Heffner and Rachel Heffner.

The family suggests that memorials be directed to Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, c/o Tami Phillips, Treasurer, 395 Country Estates, Columbia NC 27925.

Friends may visit with the family on Thursday evening, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Bryan Funeral Service, Columbia Chapel, and other times at the home.
