ORVILLE L. PHELPS
November 18, 1933 – November 3, 2017

Orville Lugene Phelps, 83, of 4144 Soundside Road, Columbia, died early Friday, November 3, 2017, at his home.

Born in Washington County, November 18, 1933, he was the son of the late Herbert Lee and Agnes White Phelps. He was married to the former Margaret Manley who survives.

Mr. Phelps was a retired Chief Petty Officer from the U. S. Coast Guard where he served for 22 years and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal. After service, he enjoyed commercial fishing. He was a member of Soundside Free Will Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday in Soundside Free Will Baptist Church. Rev. Royce Reynolds will officiate and interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Surviving in addition to his wife are five daughters, Robbin Phelps Baxley of Chesapeake, VA, Terrica R. Lincoln and husband, Edward Sr. of Elizabeth City, Tammy Edwards Smith and husband, Jim of Edward NC, Taffy Lynne Phelps of Columbia and Michelle P. O'Kelley and husband, Michael, Jr. of Jamesville; fourteen grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by an infant son Orville, Jr.; a daughter, Tammy P. Crane; 2 great-grandchildren, Austin Baxley and Genesis Martin; brothers, Parker Phelps and Charlie Phelps and sisters, Annie Furlough and Marie Woodley.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to a special account to provide special health care for his grandson, Gregory Allen Kern, at any branch of Branch Banking & Trust.

The family will receive friends on Sunday between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. at Bryan Funeral Service, Columbia Chapel and other times at the home.
