Robert R. Gibbs
June 9, 1939 – September 10, 2026

Robert Ray "Uncle Bob" Gibbs, 87, of Engelhard, died on Thursday, September 10, 2026, at his residence, surrounded by his loved ones.

He was born in Hyde County on June 9, 1939, to the late Fred Bryan Gibbs and Nancy Ann Gibbs. In November of 1962, Uncle Bob was drafted into the United States Army to serve his country during the Vietnam War. Following his deployment, he spent 18 months in Italy prior to his honorable discharge from service in November of 1964.

He worked for the Department of Adult Correction with the State of North Carolina at Currituck County Detention Center for 30 years, where he served as Assistant Superintendent in 1983.

He was a member of the Atlantic Lodge 294 of the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons for over 50 years.

A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at the Harris Gibbs Family Cemetery, which is directly across from the home place.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday, September 14, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Surviving are his nieces and nephews: Pat Austin, Julie O'Neal, Kenny Gibbs, Telita Matkins, Luerain Buck, H.L. Meekins, Jessie Bell and Henry Gibbs, Jr., and 36 great-nieces/nephews and 37 great-great-nieces/nephews and 21 great-great-great-nieces/nephews.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Joseph Gibbs, Henry Gibbs, Jr., Stewart Gibbs; four sisters, Alma Gibbs, Olive Gibbs, Doris Meekins and Christine Williams; and the following nieces and nephews, Gene Tooley Gibbs, Alice Ann Armstrong, Mary Joyce Gibbs, Whit Williams, Ricky Gibbs, Avis Mecolick, Karla Mooney, Stevie Gibbs, Jeffrey Gibbs and James Joseph Gibbs.

The family would like to extend appreciation to the Amedisys Hospice team, hospital staff, and the palliative care unit at ECU Health Medical Center.
