Walter G. Credle
August 16, 1937 – November 24, 2023

After declining health for several years, Walter Gray Credle, 86, passed away Friday, November 24, 2023, at his home in Lake Landing NC.

He was born in Hyde County on August 16, 1937, attended, and graduated from Engelhard School, and furthered his education at Gastonia Technical Institute, near Charlotte, NC, where he received his AS Degree in Electrical Engineering in 1960.

In 1961 Walter was drafted in the United States Army and was stationed in Germany and France. He married his wife Donna S. Credle of Engelhard in Dec. 1963. After receiving an honorable discharge from the military in 1964, he first accepted employment as an Engineer Technician with a calibration company in Alexandria Virginia. Several years later, he started working with Honeywell Inc. as a Senior Metrology Technician in Newport News, Virginia until October,1967, when he returned to Hyde County (Lake Landing) to start his own business of raising and selling hogs. He acquired the family farm several years later and formed the Credle Farms business.

Through this company, he also did custom farming in parts of Hyde and Tyrrell Counties. For several years, he co-owned and managed the Windy Bay Seafood Company in Stumpy Point, NC with his brother-in-law David Selby. He, along with his wife Donna, resided in Hyde County for 57 years, where they also raised their three children. Walter was the son of Herman Gray and Annie Bridgman Credle. He was preceded in death by four brothers; Ormand Credle, Francis Credle, Hyatt Credle, and Durwood Credle, as well as three sisters; Eloise C. Thompson, Charlotte Credle, and Gretchen C. Woolard. He is survived by his wife, Donna Selby Credle, a daughter Gina C. Credle (Jeff); two sons, Kevin T. Credle (Robyn), and Kenneth G. Credle (Leigh); five grandchildren: Zack, Ethan, Grayce, Meredith, and Gavin; three great-grandchildren: Elsie, Sadie, and Ivy.

Walter was a member of Masonic Atlantic Lodge 294 in Swan Quarter, NC and a member of St. George's Episcopal Church, where, over the years, he had served on various Vestry committees and as senior warden. He also was a charter member of The Mattamuskeet Jaycees and was on the organizing committee for forming Hyde County's current fire departments. In his early years he really enjoyed playing cards and dancing. He received his private pilot license and not only enjoyed flying his plane but also shrimping on his boat in the Pamlico Sound.

The family will receive friends at St. George's Parish House from 2:00 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. on Monday, November 27, 2023. A service will follow at 3: 00 p.m. at St. George's Episcopal Church in Lake Landing. The Rev. Anne Dale and Pastor Jerald Craddock will officiate. Inurnment will take place following the service.

Serving as honorary pallbearers are Lewis Clarke, Chris Clarke, Vann Gibbs, Scott Gibbs and James "Rabbit" Blount.
