Betty S. Spencer
February 16, 1935 – December 21, 2025
Betty S. Spencer, 90, of Engelhard, passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday, December 21, 2025.
Betty was born in Hyde County, on February 16, 1935, to the late Herbert L. and Zerola Midyette Sadler. She married Shirlen Wayne Spencer, who preceded her in death. Betty retired as an EMT from Hyde County EMS after 20 years of service. She was a volunteer EMT for 7 years prior to her EMS employment with Hyde County. Betty earned many awards and accolades for her EMS service. Betty and Shirlen initiated the custodial services for the Engelhard Rest Area upon its opening and supervised it for over 20 years. The rest area, “ The Park,” was important to them as it provided an enhancement to the area. Betty was a volunteer for Wheels on Meals for several years. She had a caring heart that she shared with the community.
Among her greatest joys was the companionship of her beloved dog, Dex. Dex was by her side for over 13 years. Betty enjoyed playing Bingo. She was a regular at the Engelhard Bingo parlor each week. She cared deeply about her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They put a sparkle in her eyes.
