October 12, 1937 – July 28, 2021

Betty Sue West Morris, 83, of Columbia, passed away on Wednesday, July 28, 2021.

Ms. Morris was born in Tyrrell County, on October 12, 1937, to the late Luther West and Roseline Beasley.

Ms. Morris was married to the late Floyd Earl Morris for fifty years.

Betty worked as a tax collector for Tyrrell County for thirty years. She had very fond memories of her coworkers and the many adventures they had on trips. Her hobbies included growing flowers, and she had the best green thumb for keeping plants. She loved arranging flowers and worked at Sunny Side florist for many years after her retirement.

She loved genealogy and was a member of the Tyrrell County Genealogical & Historical Society. She spent many hours collecting and categorizing family history.

Betty also loved to collect rocks from around the world and had a large collection. Many people thought of her and would bring her rocks from their trips around the world.

Betty was a member of Sandy Acres Freewill Baptist Church, she loved her church, her family, and singing in the choir. She loved cats and had many special kitties during her lifetime.

Betty is survived by her daughter, Candice Mann Derringer; sister-in-law Helen “Tink” West; nieces Lynn West Mann, Ann West Keeler, Vicky Darling, Mary Dinger; nephew, Stephen Kuchtey; five great-nieces and two great-great nieces.

Betty had many dear friends and the neighbors of Pity My Shoe Road that she thought of as family and loved them dearly. Betty leaves behind “Mister” her beloved cat.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers, William “Bill” West, Bobby West, and her stepfather Thedie Cahoon.

Per Betty’s wishes, no services will be scheduled.

Memorial contributions can be made in her memory to Sandy Acres Freewill Baptist Church or the Gum Neck Church of Christ.

Arrangements are by Bryan Funeral Service, Columbia.
