Charles Stanley Swain, Sr.
April 27, 1937 – November 20, 2024

Charles Stanley Swain, Sr., 87, of Columbia, passed away on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, at the Outer Banks Hospital.

Charles was born in Lenoir County on April 27, 1937, to the late Irvin R. and Virgie Calhoun Swain, Sr.  He was married to Peggy Hixson Swain for fifty-seven years before she preceded him in death.

Charles honorably served his country in the US Army and then went on to work, building his life in the grocery and supermarket business.  He was a member of the Sandy Acres Freewill Baptist Church, as well as the American Legion Post 182.  Charles served as a former and founding member of the Tyrrell County Fire Department and Emergency Services.  He enjoyed being a long-time, upstanding community member in Columbia.  Family and friends will deeply miss him.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Saturday, November 23, 2024, at American Legion Post 182, 285 Legion Beach Road, Columbia, officiated by Shawn Williams.  The family will visit with friends, following the service.

A private interment will take place at Azalea Memorial Gardens.

He is survived by his son, Charles Stanley Swain, Jr., of Columbia, and his daughter, Denise Swain, of Columbia; grandchildren: Charles Allen Walker, Letty Swain-Hernandez, Juletta Swain, Chris Swain, and Stephannie Bazzle (Justin); ten great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Dennis W. Swain Sr. and Irvin R. Swain, Jr. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Legion Post 182, P.O. Box 146, Columbia, NC  27925.
