Obituary

Chester Marcel Cahoon
July 16, 1951 - January 7, 2023

Chester Marcel Cahoon, 71, of Swan Quarter went on to his eternal home on January 7, 2023, surrounded by his beloved family.  Born on July 16, 1951, and raised in Swan Quarter, North Carolina, Chester was the oldest son of James Marcel Cahoon and Patricia Brinn Cahoon and big brother to Lyle Cahoon of Swan Quarter, Rory Cahoon of Swan Quarter, Kevin Cahoon of Greensboro and the late Dawn Cahoon. Chester’s childhood was filled with many days on the farm, hunting, and out on the water.

Chester found his sweet soulmate and made Debbie Daw Cahoon his wife on February 27, 1977. The two have lived happily for over 45 years and raised three children, Chad Marcel Cahoon, Clay Charlie Cahoon, and Dion James Cahoon. Clay went to his eternal resting place in May of 2018, leaving Chester’s two sons to remain by their mother’s side during this time of grief. Chester’s father, Marcel, preceded him in death as well, however, his beloved mother remained with him until his calling. Chester leaves behind three grandchildren, Bentleigh, Bella, and James Cahoon.

Chester graduated from Mattamuskeet High School in 1969 and went to work on the family farm while also working on the water as a commercial fisherman. In 1996, Chester graduated from Basic Law Enforcement Training at Beaufort County Community College and began work at Hyde Correctional Facility where he made many dear friends. Chester also worked as a Hyde County Sheriff's Deputy during his career. Chester spent a time in his life as a Mason of the Atlantic Lodge in Swan Quarter and a member of the Swan Quarter Christian Church.

Chester enjoyed life and laughed often. He got his greatest pleasure from his sons, who became his best friends and caregivers later in life. His greatest support came from his beautiful and devoted wife Debbie.

Chester was a brown belt in karate and he took great pleasure in showing off his skills to friends and family. Chester was an avid scuba diver and enjoyed the view from the deck of his fishing boat as well as diving below. Chester greatly enjoyed hunting and spent many days with his family and friends running dogs, hunting, and reloading ammunition. He enjoyed fishing for fun just as much and could always be seen with a smile and a chuckle after landing a prize.

Chester was a beloved husband and father, a devoted son, a dear brother, an uncle, cousin, and friend to many and will be dearly missed. Many fond memories will be cherished by all that loved him and his memory will long leave a smile on the faces of those that knew him best.

Visitation will be held for Chester on Wednesday, January 11 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Bryan Funeral Service, Swan Quarter. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 12, at 2 p.m. at the Swan Quarter Christian Church followed by a graveside interment at Soule Cemetery.
