Debbie K. Sawyer
July 17, 1961 – February 24, 2025
Debbie Kay Sawyer, of Columbia, passed away unexpectedly in her Edgewater home on Monday, February 24, 2025, at the age of 63. Though Debbie was a private person in recent years, her life was filled with moments of joy, laughter, and deep love for her family.
Debbie was born in Tyrrell County on July 17, 1961, to the late Joseph D. Sawyer “JD” and Stella Marie Spencer. She was the middle child and one of three girls. An attribute Debbie carried throughout life was transparency. What you see is what you get, no agendas, nothing fake or phony.
She was a member of the former Columbia Christian Church Disciples of Christ. Debbie worked for many years at the local Insurance Office in a clerical role. Debbie enjoyed her interaction with the customers she served. She remained a dedicated employee until failing health prompted early retirement.
Debbie was predeceased by her precious son, Alex J. Oliver, and sister, Kathy Sawyer Dall.
Debbie is survived by her sister, Cindy Davenport of Columbia, two nieces, Jessica Leigh Gianferra of Columbia and Samantha Marie Pollard (Berkley) of Wilmington, NC; a great-nephew, Sawyer Wilton Brickhouse, and a great-niece, Curren Elise Pollard.
Although quiet in her adult life, she is remembered by her sister, counterpart, and best friend as her childhood partner in crime and her adult sounding board for the good, the bad, and the ugly.
“Side by Side or Miles Apart, Sisters will Always Be Connected By The Heart…..”
Debbie’s family will cherish the memories of her, remember the quiet strength she carried throughout her life, and know that in her calm solitude, she lived the way she wanted. Debbie was more than content with a comfy spot on the sofa and watching her favorite TV show and movies on repeat. Aside from movies and lounging, she enjoyed family get togethers and would not likely refuse “to go” goodies at those functions. Those who knew her well understood the depth of her heart and the beauty of her spirit. Her inner circle may have been small, but the LOVE was GRAND!
A funeral service led by Pastor Vickie Woolard will take place on Saturday, March 1, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at Bryan Funeral Service in Columbia, NC.
A private committal will follow at Azalea Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends Saturday, March 1, 2025, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. until the time of the service at Bryan Funeral Service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to support the family with unexpected funeral expenses in Debbie’s honor. Contributions can be made to Bryan Funeral Service, PO Box 17, Columbia, NC 27925
