Dewey Wayne Sawyer Obituary

Dewey Wayne Sawyer
December 17, 1939 - June 24, 2026

Dewey Wayne Sawyer was born on December 17, 1939, to Luke Madison Sawyer and Betty Carawan Sawyer at the family home in Rose Bay and passed away June 24, 2026, not far from where his life began, completing a life deeply rooted in the place he loved.

Dewey graduated from West Hyde High School in 1958 and proudly served his country in the United States Air Force for four years following graduation.

On August 17, 1963, Dewey married the love of his life, Rebecca Anderson. They moved to Greenville, where he worked for Carawan Oil Company, then returned to Rose Bay, where he spent many years as a farmer until he retired in 1998.

Dewey found great joy in working the land and tending to his garden. He also enjoyed deer hunting, where he spent many seasons as a member of the Rose Bay Hunting Club.

Above all else, Dewey loved the Lord. His faith was the foundation of his life, and everyone who knew him knew where he stood in his beliefs. Whether he knew someone personally or had just met them he was always willing to share his faith, often handing out gospel tracks.

Dewey will be remembered for his hardworking spirit, love for family and the outdoors, his generous heart, and his unwavering devotion to the Lord.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 62 1/2 years, Rebecca Anderson Sawyer, as well as his siblings: Thurman Evans, Raymond Evans, Lucille Carawan, and Eileen Coggins.

Left to cherish his memory are his sons Phillip Sawyer (Tina), Michael Sawyer, Perry Sawyer (Michelle); his daughters, Amy Sawyer and Bonny Smith (Vince); his grandsons, Reid Sawyer and Nolan Sawyer; his granddaughters, Megan Wooley (Matthew) and Ashley Sawyer; as well as nieces Betty C. Scoopmire, Yvonne E. DeRuiz, Faye E. Gent, and nephews Martin Evans, and Tom Carawan Jr.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 27, 2026, at the family plot in Soule Cemetery. Pastor Jerald Craddock will officiate.

Friends can visit with the family immediately following the service and other times at Mr. Dewey's home.

Arrangements are by Bryan Funeral Service, Swan Quarter.
