Elbert S. Griffin, Jr.
July 25, 1951 – August 8, 2025
It is with heavy hearts that we announce that Elbert Stafford Griffin, Jr., 74, a beloved son, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, companion and patriot passed away at his residence, in the Ponzer community, on Friday morning, August 8, 2025. Born in Martin County on July 25, 1951, he was preceded in death by his parents, Elbert Stafford Griffin, Sr. and Amanda Faye Rogerson Griffin.
Elbert spent his childhood in Virginia, Newfoundland and Norway. With a sense of innate patriotism that never left him, Elbert enlisted in the United States Army directly out of high school and was promptly shipped off to Vietnam where he proudly served his country as a member of the 101st Airborne Division. He served in Korea, as well; afterwards returning home to fight his battles. He last worked for the United States Postal Service in Williamston, NC, where he met Frances House, his longtime companion.
He loved hunting, fishing and any other outdoor activity and was a skilled sharpshooter and archer. Elbert was gifted with a superb intelligence and wry sense of humor and was well known for his outspoken political views upon which he expounded prolifically. He enjoyed listening to John Boy and Billy and classic rock & roll and took great pleasure in the animals that visited his home.
Elbert is survived by Frances House of the home; son Allen Griffin (Jill) and granddaughter Allie Griffin of Ayden, NC; sisters Patricia G. Brett of Smithfield, VA, Charlotte G. Hudson (Jerry) of Portsmouth, VA, and Marlene G. Jones (Paul) of Hampton, VA and multiple nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, August 16th, at Mt. Olive Church of Christ, 39353 US Highway 264 E, Belhaven, NC, with Pastor Mike Caton officiating.
The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. Arrangements are by Bryan Funeral Service, Swan Quarter.
