Eugene Tooley Gibbs, 76, of Engelhard, passed away Wednesday, March 29, 2023, surrounded by his loving family.

Gene was born in Tyrrell County, on July 20, 1946, to the late Edgar and Alma Gertrude Gibbs.  He was married to the former Deborah Hodges, who survives.

Gene spent his working years as a bulldozer operator for Jerry Armstrong, later he worked for the Chesapeake Tugboat Company and as a commercial fisherman. He enjoyed driving around town with his faithful companion “little girl.”

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, April 15, 2023, at Engelhard Christian Church Disciples of Christ. The family will receive friends at the home of his daughter Tammy Brooks immediately following the service.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Beverly G. Roberts, and Tammy G. Brooks both of Engelhard; two grandchildren, Tiffaney R. Webber and Brittaney D. Webber; two great-grandchildren, SaRhia Barrow, Cierra Anderson; two sisters, Mary Joyce Gibbs of Engelhard, Alice Ann G. Armstrong of Fairfield and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his son, Jackson Eugene Gibbs, and three sons-in-law, Johnny Roberts, Bobby Brooks, and Jeff Webber.
