Evelyn S. Sadler
March 8, 1926 - June 7, 2023
On June 7, 2023, Evelyn Swindell Sadler, beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, and friend passed away at the age of 97 years young at the Piedmont Hospice Home in High Point, NC.
She was born to the late Cecil and Nina Swindell in New Holland, NC, and soul survivor of ten brothers and sisters. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Gervis E. Sadler of sixty-seven years. They were married in 1945 and raised three children, Linda Smith (Smitty) of Kernersville, NC, Dana Miller (Allan) of San Antonio, TX, Tony Sadler (Laurie) of Manteo, NC
She has four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Each of these were the joy of her heart!
She was a lifetime member of Soule Methodist Church in which she participated in teaching, choir, an officer of the church, and volunteering for any activities going on in the church.
She also attended Mt. Carmel Methodist Church in Manns Harbor for six years while living in Manteo and grew to be a very loved part of the congregation, and she returned that love with great pleasure.
She substituted at Mattamuskeet High School for 23 years and was loved by staff and students.
At the request of her grandchildren, she wrote a book “The Smell of Black Dirt” about our growing up on our farm. The good and bad times. It was a wonderful childhood remembrance for all of us.
Her great passion was refinishing and buying antique furniture. She had Mattamuskeet Antiques for a number of years where again she made many friends.
She loved all the neighborhood children and had “Cookie Dough Parties” for them, usually in the fall.
Last of all she was a devoted wife and mother. She lived for her family. We will all remember her good cooking and her festive decorations at Thanksgiving and all holidays.
Her home was open to all at any time and she will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
A funeral service will be held at Soule Methodist Church at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 12, 2023. Pastor Jerald Craddock will officiate. Burial will follow at Soule Cemetery in Swan Quarter.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
