Guy Hall Sawyer, 86, of Columbia, passed away on Thursday, October 5, 2023, at ECU Health Chowan Hospital in Edenton.

Guy Sawyer was born in Tyrrell County on May 7, 1937, to the late Morris Hall and Pauline Brickhouse Sawyer. He was married for fifty-six years to the former Faye Woodard, before her passing on July 29, 2022.

Guy was a member of the Soundside Missionary Baptist Church.  His working years were spent as a car salesman.

Guy loved his family and his granddaughter, Kayla, was the apple of his eye. He loved her deeply and always enjoyed attending her games. He enjoyed traveling and flying remote-controlled airplanes.  Guy had a servant’s heart, always helping others and loved to make everyone laugh.  He was a former coach for the Columbia JV football team.  He was known to many by his nickname “Rabbit”.

A visitation will be held from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Friday, October 6, 2023, at Bryan Funeral Service, Columbia.

The funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 7, 2023, at the Soundside Missionary Baptist Church with Royce Reynolds officiating.  Interment will follow at the church cemetery.

He is survived by his daughter, Stacy S. White and husband Travis of Conway, NC; granddaughter Kayla White of Conway, NC; two sisters-in-law, Debbie Simmons (Hal) and Betty Jo Woodard, both of Columbia; five nieces and nephews: Doris Floyd, Charles Gibson (Darla), Scott Woodard, (Jessica), Heath Woodard, and Jonathan Simmons; and several grand-nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his sister, Ruth Gibson.
