Obituary

Jeannine P. Ballance
March 1, 1932 – February 11, 2022

Jeannine Potter Ballance, 18 days shy of reaching 90 years old of Fairfield, died February 11, 2022, at her home.

Born March 1, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Seth Ceymore Potter and Gaybell Marie Franks.  She was married to Clen Labin Ballance, who preceded her in death. After their marriage in 1948, Jean made her home “down the lake”.

She was smart and a hard worker, whether replacing a motor in her washing machine, helping her husband fix a tractor, cooking collards and venison hash, covering furniture, making curtains or working for an insurance company, doing taxes for neighbors, or as a US Census Interviewer covering the beach, Ocracoke and eastern NC in the 1960’s and 1970’s. After quitting high school at age 16 to get married and start a family, she obtained her high school diploma from Mattamuskeet High School in 1972, the same year that her 3rd son graduated.  Her family, both the Potter side and Ballance side were most important to her.

Funeral services will be held at a later date in the spring of 2022.  Burial will be in the family plot in the Fairfield cemetery at that time.

Surviving are four sons:  Clen “Ashley” Ballance; “Kirby” Randall Ballance and wife Angela; Edmond “Keith” Ballance; all of Fairfield, and Mark “Kevin” Ballance and wife Julie of Columbia, SC.  Four grandchildren: Randall Ballance of Fairfield; Cameron B.
