Jesse R. Gibbs, Sr.
June 21, 1939 – September 2, 2025

Jesse Roger Gibbs Sr., 86, of Engelhard, passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by his loving family, on September 2, 2025.

Jesse was born in Hyde County, NC, to the late Edward and Hilda Midgette Gibbs.

Most will remember Jesse's smile and his love for his community. Jesse worked for many years with Eastern Fuels, delivering fuel and kerosene to the local farmers and homes around the community and W H Cox Service Station (known as Bill Harvey's store).  In 1991, Jesse and his wife began managing WH Cox Service Station.  In 1997, they were able to purchase the business and renamed it Gibbs Enterprise, known to the community as Jesse's.  They would go on to serve the community until their retirement in 2024.  Jesse will be remembered by many for the hoop cheese and hand dipped ice cream, especially the children he would give free ice cream. He loved to work, and many mornings, he would have the store up and running by 3:00 a.m. for the fishermen getting supplies before they headed out at sunrise and for the locals who would come to the store for a cup of coffee and congregate in the back of the store around an old wooden spool used for a table to share the latest news in Hyde County. In his time off from the store, Jesse enjoyed frequenting yard sales. He would never leave a yard sale without purchasing something, whether he wanted it or not. 

Jesse was a member of the Engelhard Volunteer Fire Department for many years and was a member of the former Middleton Christian Church.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 4, 2025, at Fulford Cemetery. Michael Lee Gibbs will officiate.

Jesse is survived by his devoted wife Dottie Mooney Gibbs; a son, Jesse Gibbs Jr. (Shelby) of Engelhard, a daughter; Lisa Overby of Greenville; grandchildren; Laney Mackenzie Gibbs, Jesse Reese Gibbs, Sidney Pidgeon (Zach), and Harrison Overby; one great grandchild, Everett Pidgeon; two brothers, Jimmy Gibbs (Sandra) of Engelhard, and Jackie Gibbs (Gloria) of Scotland Neck, and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Jesse was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Robert Overby, a brother, Jerry Gibbs, and a sister, Mary Jean Gibbs.

Friends may visit the family at the home at 32399 US Hwy 264, Engelhard.
