Matilda Furlough Cox, 86, of Columbia, NC, passed away on Thursday, May 18, 2023, at Brookdale Assisted Living in Greenville.

Born in Tyrrell County on March 3, 1937, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Franklin and Cora Spear Furlough.  She was married to William A. “Billy” Cox, who preceded her in death.

She was a member of the Albemarle Church of Christ, where she served as the church pianist and church treasurer for many years. She was also a member of the former Columbia Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 281. Prior to retiring from the Tyrrell County Department of Social Services, she worked for the local school system as well as Tyrrell Oil Company. 

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, May 22, 2023, at Albemarle Church of Christ. Pastor Keith Hamm and Pastor Prudencio Casas will officiate.  A burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour before the service in the church.

She is survived by her two sons, William Arthur “Art” Cox, Jr. and wife, Terri of Longs, SC and Larry E. Cox of Raleigh; a daughter, Cathy Cox Moore, and husband, Bill of Winterville; three grandchildren, Paul M. Cox, and wife Fredia, Brian A. Cox, and wife Juliana, and Caitlin M.Parker and husband Alex; and four great-grandchildren, Vincent Cox, Ava Cooper, Ryan Cox and Charlotte Parker.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers Joseph Franklin Furlough, Jr., and Melvin Furlough, and a sister, Augusta Furlough Higgins.
