Murl Jackson Gibbs, 71, of Scranton, passed away on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, at ECU Health Beaufort Hospital in Washington.

Murl Gibbs was born in Beaufort County, on June 1, 1953, to the late William Jackson and Agnes Sawyer Gibbs. 

He was a member of the Eunice Chapel Church of Christ. His working years were spent as a long and short distance truck driver and helping local farmers. He enjoyed fishing and sharing his famous fudge with friends and family.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday January 20, 2025, at the Eunice Chapel Church of Christ.  Burial will follow at the Sladesville Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery in Scranton.

The family will gather with friends at the gravesite immediately following the committal service.

Murl is survived by his longtime best friend and caregiver, Richard Credle of Scranton; two uncles, Harry Sawyer, Jr (Sandra) of Washington, Georgie Sawyer (Miriam) of the Beulah Community; five aunts, Myrtle S. Kirk of Belhaven, Shelby S. Williams (Willie), Helen G. Steptoe, both of the Beulah Community, Linda Modlin (Bud) of Pinetown and Sandra S. Brooks of South Mills.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three uncles, Ray Gibbs, Leland Gibbs, Jr, and Arthur B. Gibbs: five aunts, Rebecca S. Davenport, Willie Mae G. Bailey, Margaret G. Berry, Doris L. Gibbs and Linda G. Morris.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to Eunice Chapel Church of Christ 895 Beulah Rd, Scranton NC 27875.
