Myrtle Louise (Davenport) Mitchell Obituary

Myrtle Louise Davenport Mitchell, lovingly known throughout Tyrrell County as "Ms. Myrtle," passed peacefully at home into the arms of her Savior on June 2, 2026, at the age of 104. She will be remembered for the way she loved— her Lord, her family, and her community— deeply, faithfully, and without reservation. Her warmth brightened every room, her smile welcomed all, and her steadfast Christian faith guided her through more than a century of rich life.

Born on July 5, 1921, in Tyrrell County to James Silas Davenport and Hilda Rhodes Davenport, Myrtle grew up on her family's farm on the Scuppernong River. She often spoke fondly of her childhood, though she was quick to admit that she absolutely hated picking cotton. Those early years instilled in her a strong work ethic and a deep appreciation for family and community.

A gifted student, Myrtle graduated from high school at the age of 16 years old before attending Norfolk Business College, where she earned a certificate in business administration. In 1951, she began her career with the Tyrrell County Extension Office, dedicating 23 years as office administrator and serving the community with compassion and a servant's heart. She also faithfully supported her husband, Robert Leonard "Bobby" Mitchell, during his 80+ years as a barber and 20 years as a Tyrrell County Magistrate. Together, they proudly served on the Southern Albemarle Association, advocating for paved roads in Tyrrell and surrounding counties.

Her greatest earthly love story began in 1937 when she first met Bobby. They built a beautiful life and shared an extraordinary marriage of 81 years. Their love was legendary within their family and throughout the Columbia community. Myrtle often said, "I love my Bob," and anyone who knew them witnessed a partnership rooted in faith, devotion, laughter, and unwavering support. The community embraced the couple as pillars of Columbia. After Bobby's passing in 2021 at age 104, many wondered if Myrtle would follow soon after. Yet, even in her profound grief, her enduring faith and boundless love remained evident until the end.'

Myrtle was also a pillar of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, serving as organist for decades and sharing her musical gifts and love for the Lord with generations of worshippers. Throughout her 104 years, Myrtle had a remarkable gift for making everyone she met feel special, valued, and loved. Whether sharing a meal, offering a kind word, playing a hymn on the organ, or simply greeting a stranger with her infectious smile, Myrtle embodied grace, generosity, and genuine care for others. When asked her secret to longevity, her answer was simple: faith in God and investing in people.

She is survived by her son, Frederic Mitchell (Cynthia) of Wilmington; grandchildren Jamie Koch of Kill Devil Hills, Courtney Sauter (Adam) of Wilmington, and Vann Mitchell (Brandi) of Wilmington; and five cherished great-grandchildren: Molly Hargett, Emma Holland, Finn Sauter, Fletcher Mitchell, and Claire Sauter.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband and her brother, James S. "Jimmy" Davenport, Jr.

While her family grieves the loss of her earthly presence, they rejoice knowing she has been reunited with the love of her life and welcomed into the presence of the God she served faithfully for more than a century.

A life so beautifully lived leaves a legacy measured far beyond years. Myrtle Mitchell's legacy lives on in the faith she shared, the family she nurtured, the community she served, and the countless lives touched by her kindness.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, June 6, 2026, with Allison Lancaster officiating at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church.

The family will gather with friends in the church fellowship hall immediately following the service. A private committal will take place at Azalea Memorial Gardens.
