Pamela L. Basnight
March 9, 1976 - January 30, 2026
With profound sorrow and deep gratitude for a life beautifully lived, we announce the passing of Pamela Lovate Basnight, of Durham, North Carolina, who entered eternal rest on January 30, 2026, at the age of 49. Born on March 9, 1976, Pam’s life was a powerful testament to faith, service, resilience, and unconditional love.
Pam was the beloved daughter of the late Arnold L. Basnight and Hazel Pearl Basnight. From an early age, she was deeply rooted in her love for God, joining Piney Grove Disciples Church of Christ, where she faithfully served on the usher board. Her relationship with God was the foundation of her life and the source of her strength. Through seasons of pain, prolonged hospital stays, and unimaginable challenges, Pam remained steadfast in her faith. God was always her focus, her refuge, and the One who carried her through every trial.
She attended and graduated from Columbia High School, where her discipline and determination were evident early on. Pam continued her academic journey at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, where she studied nursing and proudly joined the illustrious sisterhood of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. Her commitment to service, sisterhood, and excellence was evident both in and beyond the classroom.
After graduation, Pam began a new chapter in Durham, North Carolina, where she devoted 23 years to the nursing profession. She began her career in 1997 as a new graduate nurse in the float pool, where her skill, dedication, and leadership potential quickly became evident. Pam began her career at Durham Regional Hospital, providing compassionate and skilled care to countless patients. Her career later continued at Duke, where she advanced from the float pool to serving as a Clinical Team Lead and later as Interim Manager. In recognition of her exceptional dedication and impact, Pam received the Duke Friends of Nursing Award in 2005.
Pam was the lead preceptor of the float pool, playing a pivotal role in the successful implementation of the new graduate nurse orientation program. She facilitated education, mentored countless nurses, and held her teams accountable—always with care, patience, and compassion. She was known for uplifting others, believing in them before they believed in themselves. One of her former managers, Faith, described Pam as “the wind beneath so many people’s wings,” a quiet force who never sought recognition, yet was truly the backbone of the float pool.
Even while facing serious illness, Pam continued to give fully of herself. She carried her challenges with dignity and grace, often showing up on days when she could have rested, choosing instead to serve others with the same selflessness that defined her life. Pam was respected as a leader, trusted as a caregiver, and admired for her integrity, humility, and heart for service. Caring for others was not simply her profession—it was her calling.
Above all, Pam’s greatest joy was her family, especially her role as a mother. She leaves behind her only and deeply beloved daughter, Ashia Basnight, of Durham, North Carolina, who was the pride of her life and the living reflection of her love. She also leaves behind her cherished grandpup, Amor, who brought her comfort and joy.
Pam is survived by her loving mother, Hazel Basnight, of Gum Neck, North Carolina; her sisters, Trina Selby, of Boston, Massachusetts, and Benita Sawyer, of Greenville, North Carolina; and her brothers, Derrick Basnight, of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, and Jamar Brinkley (Janelle), of Wake Forest, North Carolina. She also leaves to cherish her memory her nieces: Keyonia Basnight and Kalicia Basnight, of Greenville, North Carolina; Ariana Selby, of Boston, Massachusetts; and Arielle, of Georgia; and her nephews: John Sawyer (Jamariona), of Hinesville, Georgia, Jamal Selby, and Lamont Selby, both of Boston, Massachusetts.
A special acknowledgement is extended to Bria Carter, whom Pam loved as her second daughter, and a heartfelt thank you to Samuel Forehand, the love of her life, for his unwavering devotion, love, and support. Pam will be remembered as a woman of unwavering faith, quiet strength, and boundless compassion. She loved God deeply, served others selflessly, and lived with grace even in suffering. Though her physical presence is no longer with us, her spirit, her faith, and her love will live on forever in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 7, 2026, at Bryan Funeral Service Chapel, Columbia. Burial will follow at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery.
Arrangements are by Bryan Funeral Service, Columbia.
