Peggy L. Godwin

Peggy Lewis Godwin, 88, of Columbia, died, Saturday, August 20, 2022, at River Trace Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Washington.
Mrs. Peggy was born in Wilson County on February 18, 1934, to the late Robert and Viola Smith Lewis. She was married to Jessie Thomas Godwin who preceded her in death.
She was a member of Cabin Swamp Church of Christ and later became a member of Columbia Christian Church Disciples of Christ.
She worked as a licensed practical nurse for the former Pungo District Hospital for many years. Later her nursing training prepared her to care for several family members. She was an advocate against domestic violence, and in Tyrrell County she was instrumental in the Senior Citizen Center, Lady’s Home Extension, and the Tyrrell County Literacy Program.
A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, August 24, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. at Cabin Swamp Church of Christ Church Cemetery. Pastor Gregg Brookins will officiate.
Surviving is a son, Saxon Baker of Mt. Holly, NC; two daughters, Pandora B. College, and Spring B. Perkins both of Columbia; eight grandchildren, Olivia A. Baker, Chloe R. Baker, Jonathan College, Scarlette C. Lyon, Brandon Sutton, Cameron Harrell, Zachary Gregory, Jacob E. Nixon; one honorary grandchild; eight great-grandchildren, Colson Baker, Shane Toler, Annabelle Rose Lyon, Callie Hope Sutton, McKinley Faith Sutton, Ella Grace Sutton, and Bentley Ramos.
She was preceded in death by a son Travis Baker; four brothers and four sisters.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
