Phyllis S. Ballance
April 22, 1957 – August 4, 2023

Phyllis Swindell Ballance, 66, of Fairfield, passed away peacefully, Friday, August 4, 2023, at ECU Health Medical Center, Greenville.

Phyllis was born in Beaufort County on April 22, 1957, to the late Richard Arlen Swindell and Ella Lou Cahoon Swindell who survives.

She was married to Buddy Ballance who also survives. She was a member of Soule Methodist Church, a graduate of East Carolina University, with a Masters of Education, and a member of the professional society for women educators Delta Kappa Gamma. She dedicated more than thirty years to educating the children of Hyde County, instilling the love of reading and learning. Her greatest love and joy were her grandchildren, who knew her as their “Mammy”.

In addition to her husband and mother surviving is a son, Madison Ballance (Mallory) of Engelhard; a daughter, Georgia B. Carawan (Dillon) of Swan Quarter; three grandchildren, Baylor Ballance, Cora Ballance, and Reece Carawan; a brother, Ricky Swindell (Liz) of Swan Quarter; a sister, Jeannie Swindell (Chrissie) of Wake Forest and many nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at 10: 00 a.m., on Monday, August 7, 2023, at the family plot in Fairfield Cemetery. Pastor Jerald Craddock and Pastor Valerie Tyson will officiate.

The family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Sunday, August 6, 2023, at the funeral home.
