Richard A. Swindell
August 13, 1933 – May 8, 2021  

Richard Arlen Swindell, 87, died, Saturday, May 8, 2021, at his residence in Swan Quarter.

Mr. Arlen was born in Hyde County on August 13, 1933, to the late Marvin Albert and Georgia Carawan Swindell. He was married to the former Ella Cahoon who survives.

He was a member of Soule United Methodist Church and of the Swan Quarter Atlantic Masonic Lodge No. 294 A.F. & A.M.

From an early age, Mr. Arlen worked on the family farm keeping everything going and in good working condition. He loved to teach his children and grandchildren. He was an inventor that had a deep interest in anything old and family history.

He loved to fish and provided guiding services at the Mattamuskeet Lake for several years. He honorably served his country with the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a good husband, father, and grandfather who enjoyed sharing the fruits of his garden with his friends and family members.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 am., Tuesday, May 11, 2021, in Soule Cemetery. Pastor Jerald Craddock will officiate.

The family will receive friends at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Arlen Swindell.

In addition to his wife surviving is a son, Ricky Swindell (Liz) of Swan Quarter; two daughters, Phyllis Ballance (Buddy) of Fairfield, and Jeannie Swindell (Chrissie) of Wake Forest; seven grandchildren, Lance Swindell (Ashley), Loren Gibbs (Matthew), Lindsey Swindell, Madison Ballance (Mallory), Georgia Carawan (Dillon), Ellie Galantis (John), and Gant Sipfle (Rachel); seven great-grandchildren, Tanner Swindell, Tatum Swindell, Henley Gibbs, Berkley Gibbs, Isla Gibbs, Baylor Ballance, and Gavin Galantis; one sister, Sandra Soltz of Kill Devil Hills.

He was preceded in death by a sister Phyllis Anne Swindell, and two brothers Roy Swindell, and William Jabin Swindell.   

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Soule United Methodist Church, Amedisys Hospice, or to a charity of choice.
