Samuel Oliver Lucas
August 16, 1924 - March 7, 2022

Samuel Oliver Lucas, passed away peacefully Monday, March 7, 2022, at his home in Cool Springs.  Oliver was 97 years old. He leaves his memory to be cherished by his survivors; his wife of 72 years, Frances Ange Lucas, two sons, William Franklin Lucas (Sherlyn) of Plymouth, NC, Bradley Nelson Lucas of Winterville, NC; four grandchildren, Amanda Lucas Lipscomb (Brian), Holly Lucas Eubanks (David), Patrick Nelson Lucas; step-granddaughter, Patricia Wilson Thornburg (Joe); three great-grandchildren, Lucas Christian Eubanks, Dylan Scott Lipscomb, Austin Drake Lipscomb; two step-great-grandchildren Cynthia Dare Thornburg, Joseph Andrew Thornburg Jr.

Oliver was born to the late Samuel Boyd Lucas and Nancy (Nannie) Oliver Lucas in Washington County on August 16, 1924. He retired from Weyerhaeuser Paper Company as an electrician. He was a member of the First Baptist Church.

One of the signature events of his life was when he served his country as Private First Class in WW II in Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands. At his passing, he was noted as one of the oldest Washington County WWII veterans.

In his own way, he loved his family more than anything. He had a love for dogs and spent many hours raising, hunting, and running dogs.  He loved horses and enjoyed riding on the beaches at the Outer Banks.

Samuel Oliver Lucas was preceded in death by his parents and brother, John Harvey Lucas.

The Lucas family expresses great appreciation for the devotion and love extended during Oliver’s illness by Beverly Slade, Pam Hardison, June Morris, Janie Bryant, and Amedisys Hospice, Plymouth, N.C.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, March 13, 2022, at 2:00 pm at Plymouth Baptist Church. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church fellowship hall.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Amedisys Hospice, 201 E. Water St., Plymouth, NC 27962, American Legion Post 164 /Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4023 c/o Mike Sawyer, Logan Ave, Plymouth NC 27962.

Arrangements are by Bryan Funeral Service at Hampton Academy, Plymouth.
