Syble S. Knotts, 88, of Columbia, passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, April 22, 2026.
Syble was born in Dare County on July 4, 1937, to the late Curtis Carven and Rosa B. Scott Smith. She was married to John Kelly Knotts, who preceded her in death.
Syble worked for the Tyrrell County School system as a bus driver and lunchroom supervisor. Years later, she worked in the food service industry, and before retirement, she worked for the USDA in the meat inspection department.
Syble enjoyed fishing, spending time on the Alligator River, crocheting, and knitting in her spare time. She enjoyed her church family in the Alligator Community. She was known for her sweet potato cakes and home cooking.
A private, family service will be held at a later date.
She is survived by her daughter, June Knotts of Columbia; grandchildren: Sybil Brickhouse and husband, Harley of Columbia, Mandy Owens of Hampton, VA, Kelli Owens and husband, Jeremy Mayer of Culpeper, VA; great-grandson, Caleb Mayer of Richmond, VA; and her sister, Lillian Spencer of Chesapeake, VA.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Marie Knotts Graham, her brothers, Eugene Burrell Smith and Curtis Cohen Smith, and her sister, Jacqueline Smith.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church c/o Ms. Kim Owens, 327 Jerry Post Office Road, Columbia, NC 27925.
