William Golden Simpson, Jr.
December 28, 1960 - November 24, 2024
William Golden Simpson, Jr., a relentless advocate for justice and a beloved member of the Chapel Hill community, passed away on November 24, 2024, at the age of 63. Born in Plymouth, North Carolina to Martha Blount Rodman Simpson and the late William Golden Simpson, Sr., William grew up around the waters of the Albemarle Sound. And, though he moved away, his love and attachment to that area never waned. He often returned to the Sound when he needed to feed his spirit and was happiest when he could be in a boat on a beautiful day with calm waters.
William first moved to Chapel Hill when he was accepted to the University of North Carolina, earning a degree in history in 1983 and a law degree in 1986. Following his graduation and acceptance to the North Carolina Bar, William worked as Legal Director for the American Civil Liberties Union of North Carolina until 1993 when he accepted a position in the Philadelphia Public Defender's office. His dedication to defending fundamental rights guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution earned him the Norman B. Smith Award from the ACLU-NC in 1994. For the next several years, in his position as a public defender, William continued to uphold the principles of equal justice, providing legal defense to those who might not otherwise have access and steadfastly upholding the principle of "innocent until proven guilty." In 2000, he moved back to Chapel Hill to join the law firm of Ferguson Stein Chambers Gresham & Sumter and, in 2012, Tin Fulton Walker & Owen. Throughout his 38-year legal career, William tirelessly advocated for those unable to defend themselves, championed the rights of all clients without prejudice, and always prioritized justice above personal gain.
Beyond his professional life, William was a man of many interests. He was an enthusiastic follower of music, all types, with a particular fondness for Americana and bluegrass. He loved to fish (even when he didn't catch anything), boat, swim, and ski. A great cook, he appreciated good food, regardless of whether it came from a food truck or a Michelin-starred restaurant. And he could always tell you where to find the best BBQ in any region of the state.
Those who knew William describe him as someone who endeavored to do the right thing, extended friendship to nearly everyone, and lived a life of purpose and passion. Beloved by his family, William was a devoted husband, caring father, cherished son and wise big brother. He will be deeply missed.
He is survived by his wife, Susan Lee Simpson; his daughter, Jade Lee Simpson; his mother, Martha Blount Rodman Simpson; and his sisters, Elizabeth Simpson Davenport and Suzanne Simpson Koonce.
