Garland M. O’Brien

Garland O’Brien, 77 of Albemarle Beach passed away Wednesday December 13, 2017 at his home on the Albemarle Sound.  Born in Person County, NC on July 15, 1940, he was the son of the late Taylor Curtis O’Brien and Annie Lamberth O’Brien.  He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Charlotte Brockhard O’Brien. 

Garland was a graduate of Chowan College, and came to Plymouth as a young graduate to work in printing and linotype for the Roanoke Beacon in the early 1960’s.  Here, in Plymouth, is where he met his wife, Charlotte. 

He was the branch manager for Weyco Credit Union for several years seeing the Credit Union through its early years as it began to grow.  Later, he and his wife owned O’Brien Office Supply where they spent many years working together as a family.

Garland was a member of the Plymouth Volunteer Fire Department for 20 years, where he held the position of Dept Secretary for many years.   He also was one of the rescue squad members, which was operated by the Fire Department, later being a driver and EMT, for what was then, the Washington County Hospital operated ambulance.

He also, for years, played softball on the Beacon Softball Team

He was a member of the Plymouth Church of the Nazarene

Garland loved living on the Albemarle Sound for over 40 years where he loved to garden, and he also carried on a family tradition for a while of beekeeping.  He loved to fish and you could always find a fishing pole and a crab pot somewhere close by.   

Surviving, in addition to his wife, is his son Garland (Gary) M. O’Brien II of Beltsville, MD.  

He was preceded in death by his brothers Leigh, Archie, Pat and Ben O’Brien, and his sisters Edith Dixon, and an infant sister. 

Per his request, no services are planned at this time.
